We were treated to some beautiful close-up views of this bright red shrimp, seen at a depth of 1,795 meters (5,889 feet) during Dive 05 of the 2023 Shakedown + EXPRESS West Coast Exploration expedition. Red is a common color for animals in the deep ocean, as red light does not reach ocean depths, so deep-sea animals that are red actually appear black and thus are less visible to predators and prey.
